Featuring Classic Affordable Bordeaux for Every Palate
The Bottle Shop of Spring Lake has officially announced March 2019 as 'Bordeaux Month'. This spectacular event will include 31 days of sale prices nationwide, local consumer wine tastings every weekend, and 300+ Bordeaux wines on offer from across the entire region. Bordeaux continues to be the #1 wine for collectors and auctions in the world, AND offers incredible values for folks who love classic European reds. For 30+ years the Bottle Shop has been buying Bordeaux wine from an import company based in New York named Monsieur Touton. In the early days, it was our dad Thomas Murray who would meet & taste with owner Guillaume Touton, a French ex-pat who started selling French wine to NYC restaurants back in 1982. Over the years, Touton built a reputation for sourcing small, family estates from his native Bordeaux region, as well as Classified Bordeaux from the best vintages and most famous châteaux. We will taste a range of Bordeaux wines including Touton's own estate located in Côtes-de-Blaye, an appellation across the Gironde River from the Médoc and not too far northeast of Saint Emilion. Our guest VIP will be our own tasting specialist Austin Corso. After several years of learning about wine on the job, while simultaneously getting a degree in engineering, Austin has started the next phase of his professional life, but we are keeping him 'in the family' and bringing him back for this VIP event. Château Belair Monange Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2009
This is exactly what a lovely Saint Emilion should taste like…pure and aromatic with red roses, red cherries and purple plums, this wine is ripe without being jammy and wonderfully balanced. Good length on the palate and silky tannins create a crowd-pleasing, reasonably priced Merlot-based classic. We have enjoyed this at home with rack of lamb followed by Comte Gruyere and Dijon mustard. It will be wonderful with steaks, pork roasts, peppered tuna, Petit Basque sheep's milk cheese and cured meats as well.
This classic Bordeaux from the epic 2015 vintage has rich, smooth flavors of black cherry, cassis, mocha and licorice with a velvety mouthfeel. It is from a small production estate which typically produces about 2500 cases per year, and the wine is aged in 20% new oak from 100% handpicked grapes. Owned by Guillaume Touton, from whom we have been buying Bordeaux for over 30 years, the Les Grands Marechaux estate has sandy clay soils in the appellation of Blaye Cotes de Bordeaux. Château Bois Pertuis is located in St Christophe de Double, near the Double forest, famous for its merrain oaks, used in barrel making.
This estate stretches over a terroir 20 km north of Saint-Emilion. Formerly known as 'Les Hauts de Saint Emilion' this region has a long tradition of wine-growing. The terroir at Château Bois Pertuis is made up of gravel and sand which brings finesse, and of clay which provides richness. Château Bois Pertuis produces a red Bordeaux wine that is well balanced and round. The blending of the noble varieties, mostly Merlot, results in a very fine wine, close to those of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. The vineyard is planted to 86% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc. Serve with your finest red meat dishes, French cheeses, especially Comté gruyere and pâté.
RATED 94+ WINE ADVOCATE : 'This extraordinary terroir, now exploited by Edouard Moueix, the son of Christian, seems to be coming to life in a dramatic fashion. Never a hedonistic wine, but very intellectual, the 2009 suggests a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with black currants and black cherries. Medium to full-bodied, and impressive, this is a structured wine that needs to be forgotten for at least a decade, and then drunk over the following 30+ years. If readers are looking for the quintessential example of a terroir-dominated wine, this is Lesson 101 in terroir.'
