This supremely reliable and traditional estate has been called the 'Latour of Saint-Estèphe' and is considered by many collectors and critics to be producing First-Growth quality, extremely ageworthy wines. Planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, Montrose has extremely old vines, many over 50+ years old, and produces a very rich, very complex, full-bodied wine. In the 2005, the wine is super tannic and concentrated, and will require decanting for several hours if opened between 2015-2020. A massive blockbuster!

Wine SpectatorBlack licorice and blackberry aromas, with hints of mineral, lead to a full-bodied palate. Very chewy, with loads of tannins, yet this follows through with beautifully ripe fruit, mineral and mint. Fascinating. Best after 2012.

Wine AdvocateThe 2005 Montrose has a saturated purple color. As backward as one would expect of a St.-Estèphe, it offers notes of sweet blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, earth, graphite and spice. It is medium to full-bodied, moderately tannic, and still a decade away from prime-time drinkability. This 30+ year wine is clearly outstanding, but not one of the vintage's most prodigious efforts.
