Mullan Road Cellars was created by Dennis Cakebread in Washington State. Dennis is a 40+ year wine veteran of the prestigious Cakebread Cellars in Napa Valley, CA, who landed in Walla Walla, WA in 2010 in search of another winery venture. Upon arrival he connected with winemaker Aryn Morell, a Washington native with extensive experience in the Columbia Valley and Napa Valley, and Mullan Road Cellars was born. Dennis is the late Jack Cakebread's son, who founded Cakebread Cellars.

“Mullan Road Cellars focuses on small-production, age worthy Bordeaux-style red blends. We select fruits from prime vineyards in the soon-to-be-recognized Royal Slope appellation along with the famed Seven Hills Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley appellation, one of the most recognized locations in Washington”, explains Dennis Cakebread. “I was drawn to Washington State for its consistent wine quality, friendly personalities, and camaraderie. Mullan Road Cellars has been a journey, from learning the area and getting to know the people and communities, to the continuous exploration for great areas and vineyards. We are thrilled to finally launch a project that has been in development for years.”

The winery’s namesake, the historic Mullan Road built in 1859, was a 611-mile wagon trail into eastern Washington via the Rockies and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mullan Road Cellars’ illustrated label was inspired by photos of the actual Mullan Road, conveying adventure and a pioneering spirit. Mullan Road Cellars’ first release was the Columbia Valley Red Wine 2012.

This blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc sends up vivid soprano notes of lilac and blueberry with base scents of chocolate and balsamic. Floral tones persist on the palate with abundant violets. Cigar leaf comes in midway before the saturation of blue fruit takes over and washes through the oak-kissed finish.

Roasted coffee bean, tar, melted butter and dark chocolate aromas are up front. An assortment of fruit and barrel flavors follow. Lightly chewy tannins back it up. The freshness is compelling. Best after 2024.
