In the late 1970’s and early ‘80s, Howell Mountain was making a name for itself, thanks to a few iconic wineries (some with pre-prohibition roots) that eventually helped make Howell Mountain the very first sub AVA of Napa Valley. Howell Mountain AVA was created in 1984, and it was soon after, that the owners of Arkenstone first discovered, and were irretrievably drawn to this stunning land. After purchasing the property in 1988, with a serious commitment to tending this great location, Arkenstone Estate was born. For nearly 30 years, Arkenstone has shared the beauty and bounty of the estate with visitors as well as bear, coyote, Mountain lion, rattle snake, scorpion and raptors of all sorts. Remnants of native Obsidian work, as well as historic dry-stack walls made of ancient local stone, are constant reminders that Arkenstone is just the latest inhabitant to appreciate, care for and benefit from this unique land.

With the goal of producing the best wine possible from this beautiful site, owners Ron and Susan Krausz chose to become a true Domain Estate, with an underground winery completed in 2008, along with Estate vineyards planted primarily in 1998, allow Arkenstone to have total control over all aspects of winemaking. In making this decision, the Krausz' were thinking foundationally and long term, taking into account the stewardship that would be necessary to support thriving vineyards, and a healthy ecosystem throughout the ranch for many years to come. They chose to move slowly and carefully in the development of this Estate in order to maintain and nurture the native plant and animal species, and respect the contours of the land. They also took time to seek out the best of old world practices, along with the newest technology, in the vineyards as well as the winery, in order to make wine at the highest level possible. Arkenstone's first Vintage to the market was the 2006 vintage.

Arkenstone's vineyards have been farmed organically from the beginning, continuing to promote soil vitality with planted cover crops and composting. They also continue to learn, and implement ways to help make the entire project more sustainable in terms of materials, energy and water usage. An established bee colony and many occupied owl houses help foster this healthy eco-system, leaving a smaller population of rodents and a bonus of delicious honey! Much of the property is the way it was when the Krausz' first saw it and there is still a sense of discovery as you hike through vineyard, forest and meadow.

Arkenstone NVD (Napa Valley District) is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon with some Mountain Sass. The balance of tannins, minerality, acidity and intense fruit concentration hit all of the notes on the palate and leave you with a satisfyingly long finish. Sourced from vineyards at around 1600 feet of elevation in the Eastern Napa Mountains, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon will wow whomever has the opportunity to drink it.

The 2018 NVD Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 80% new. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose reveals notes of warm plums, baked black currants and black cherries with suggestions of clove oil, black tea, Chinese five spice and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with firm, crunchy black berry flavors with bags of freshness and plush tannins, finishing with compelling energy. 1,200 cases were made.

Moving to the reds, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon NVD comes from a mix of valley floor and mountain fruit, offering medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of blue fruits, chocolate, roasted herbs, and bouquet garni. It has plenty of fruit, soft tannins, and a balanced, delicious style geared for drinking over the coming 10-15 years or so.
