The vineyards of Casanuova delle Cerbaie are located just north of Montalcino between 280 and 370 meters above sea level on soil dating back to the Eocene period of calcareous clays, marl and galestro. The prevailing south-west exposition of the vineyards both on the prestigious hill of Montosoli and surrounding the winery at Casanuova offer a particularly moderate climate, sheltered by natural barriers to the North and West.
Since the medieval times this area has been prized for vineyards, and in fact Ian d’Agata refers to it as grand cru in his book Italy’s Native Wine Grape Terroirs “Casanuova delle Cerbaie own 1.5 hectares in Montosoli’s sweet spot, and its vines were planted in 1999.” The winery was founded in the late 1970s but since 2008 it has been owned by an American investor with a passion for classically styled Montalcino wines. The vineyards are farmed according to organic protocols, though they are not certified; all fermentations are spontaneous, and all aging is done in Stockinger casks from 20 – 25 hectoliters in size. Approximately 3000 cases, mostly of Brunello, are produced each year. In rare vintages, a single vineyard Montosoli Riserva is made, but it’s only happened six times in the last twenty years. Otherwise, the Brunello is a blend of fruit from the Montosoli and Casanuova holdings.
This is made of 100% Sangiovese Grosso mostly from the prestigious hill of Montosoli to the north of Montalcino located 250-300 metres above sea level on land dating back to the Eocene period characterized by calcareous, marl, argillaceous and conglomerate rocks. The vines are planted with south-west exposition and the grapes are picked by hand. An intense extraction with frequent pumping over is performed, followed by long maceration on the skins then aged 30 months in Slavonian oak barrels selected by Stockinger, and 6 months in bottle. Approximately 2500 cases are produced each year of this Brunello normale.

A fresh and balanced red with cherry, lemon and hints of cedar. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a powerful finish. Wonderful length. Shows intensity and polish. Better in 2021.

Ashen earth and smoke give way to black cherries, incense and exotic spices as the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This floods the palate with rich, velvety textures and a dense display of mineral-tinged dark fruits, all offset by a stunning mix of vibrant acidity and sour citrus tones. Its tannic structure comes forward only through the finale, reminding you that this elegant beauty is still a painfully young Brunello. The 2016 is packed full of potential and really shows just how much Casanuova delle Cerbaie has upped their game over the last few vintages.

A fresh and floral red, exuding red berry aromas. Elegant and vibrant, featuring strawberry, cherry, rose and mineral flavors. This is also linear and focused, gaining speed through the refined finish. Sangiovese. Best from 2024 through 2040. 2,500 cases made, 800 cases imported.

Crushed berry, wild herb and violet aromas lift out of the glass. Poised and medium bodied, the vibrant, savory palate features juicy red cherry, orange zest and star anise accompanied by taut, polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it tangy. Drink 2023-2028.
