Hands down, one of our favorite all-time estates in Bordeaux to visit is Château Angélus in St. Emilion. Literally everything this 8th generation family does is at such an impeccable level, making this wine an incredible value for such a high pedigree. Wines have been crafted here by the Laforest family and their heirs since 1782. The estate has been farming organically for decades and also has been certified organic since 2021.
The vineyard of Château Angélus is situated in a natural amphitheatre overlooked by the three Saint-Emilion churches. In the middle of this special site, the sounds were amplified and the angelus bells could be heard ringing in the morning, at midday and in the evening. They cadenced the working day in the vineyards and villages, calling the men and women to stop their labours for a few minutes and pray.
The great French impressionist painter, Jean-François Millet immortalised this moment of prayer in his magnificent work “The Angelus”, which is now on show in Paris’ Musée d’Orsay. The Angelus devotion has a long history originating in 11th-century monastic custom, but the ringing of a noon bell is attributed to Pope Callistus III, who ordered a prayer for protection against the Turkish invasions of the 1400’s.
The bell on the Château Angélus label recalls the call to prayer and the moment of devotion.
Today Angélus is helmed by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, who represents the eighth generation of the Boüard de Laforest family. After Catherine Sophie de Boüard de Laforest in 1800 and Eugénie Chatenet in 1900, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal is the third woman to preside over the fortunes of this estate, where she was born and grew up. She has an almost physical relationship with Angélus, living with the land and drawing from it the courage and determination she needs to keep on course. It gives her emotional and spiritual strength, and she sees herself as an integral part of this ecosystemic whole.
She measures the full importance of the responsibilities that were entrusted to her in 2012 and the accountability involved. She strives to display how she embraces the founding values, which have guided and supported this family since the very beginning of the story that connects it with this estate: integrity, hard work, humility and a sense of duty. Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal will continue the work of her father, grandfathers and ancestors, focused on the sole purpose of serving the renown of Angélus, ensuring that the name which connotes excellence and timelessness, continues to shine over time.
Three months of summer without water: never before seen in the memory of winegrowers! This surprising climatology, these incredible conditions associated with the terroirs at Angélus, have given us a great, unpredicted, unexpected vintage. The harvest, picking calmly and when we wanted, took place from 4 to 21 October. The long time on skins allowed us to extract very ripe grape seed tannins this year. These tannins have an elegant structure, stable and for very long ageing. As we had expected of them, the Merlots show an extremely deep colour, and their rich alcohol is perfectly integrated. They are dominated by fruit, freshness, breed and elegance. The Cabernets Francs, with their crunchiness, which we had suspected during the harvest, magnify this very great vintage of Angélus and enthral us with their level of quality: a touch of cashmere tannins, great smoothness, spicy notes. They rival the Merlots in their elegance. 2016 is a radiant vintage mirroring the incredible summer conditions which shaped its identity and determined its destiny.

This is a rich, perfumed wine, with dense tannins and intense layers of black plum and spice. The palate is firmly built yet broadened out by plump dark-fruit tones and honed by a solid, dry core. Drink from 2025.

The 2016 Angélus is composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, aged 18 to 22 months in new barrels and foudres. Deep garnet-purple colored, it drifts effortlessly out of the glass with sensuous notes of lavender, candied violets, garrigue, Ceylon tea and iron ore with a core of warm black cherries, mulberries, ripe plums and aniseed plus wafts of cedar chest and cloves. Medium to full-bodied, the perfumed fruit whispers of great intensity and depth, with the vivacious fruit well knit into the plush, seductive frame of velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. Still very tightly wound with amazing tension at this stage, it truly needs a good 6-8 more years in bottle to deliver the fully expressed layers that this soft-spoken, profound beauty promises.

This goes for the gusto, with a deep and broad swath of well-roasted tobacco, espresso and loam out front. The core of dark currant and fig fruit will have to catch up, but this red has the energy and juicy drive to eventually do so. When it melds fully, this will be a smoky, alluring, tobacco-fueled wine. Best from 2024 through 2040. 8,333 cases made.
