'Mas Cavalls' is named after the Catalan name for Horse Farm, since Marimar Torres' equestrian center lies right below the Doña Margarita vineyard. Named after the late matriarch of the Torres family, this 20-acre vineyard is located on the Bohemian Highway, between Freestone and Occidental, in the Sonoma Coast appellation of origin. The cool breezes and drifting fog from the Pacific Ocean, six miles away, make it an ideal site for Pinot Noir. Planted in the European style of super-high density, with 2,340 vines per acre, the yields are low and labor is intensive; but the vines live longer and the grapes acquire better balance and greater concentration, as well as more elegance and finesse.
The grapes were harvested September 3-14. After minimal crushing, they fermented in small stainless steel tanks, with no whole clusters. The wine was aged in premium French oak barrels, 38% new, coopered by Remond from the forest of Bertranges, Marchive and Rousseau from the Center of France. It was bottled, unfined and unfiltered, in August 2016. The vineyard’s 20 acres of Pinot Noir are planted with three different clones. The blend of clones in this vintage is 80% Pommard, 11% Dijon 667 and 9% Dijon 115. Only 400 cases produced.
Winegrower Marimar Torres hails from a legendary, regal wine family from Spain. She fell in love with California as a young adult, and set out to make a name for herself in America. Marimar chose the rolling hills of western Sonoma County, the Russian River/Green Valley appellation, a perfect microclimate for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Only 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 50 miles north of San Francisco, the site is influenced by the sea's cooling breezes and drifting fog. That is why Marimar Torres selected this privileged location to 'export' the Torres family legacy of fine wines to California. Today she is joined by her daughter Cristina, who we had the pleasure of meeting, and the two women create and promote beautiful, elegant wines made with sustainable and organic methods.

What a treat to drink a wine that has been properly aged! This elegant, beautiful 2015 Pinot from a high quality site on the Sonoma Coast has an expressive nose, showing aromas of cranberry, currants and pomegranate, along with gently spiced clove notes. The tannins are smooth and silky and the finish is polished and delicious.

Some riper fruit here, moving to plums and dried cherries with blueberry nuances. The palate has a bright core of ripe cherry-plum fruit and smooth, laid-back tannins.
