At the beginning of the 20th century, this estate founded in 1863 by Frédéric Mugnier, a liquor-maker in Dijon, included nearly twenty hectares of the best vineyards spread over Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. In 1950, following the economic crisis of the 1930s and the world war, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, great-grandson of the first Frédéric, chose to sell the liquor business, and lease the vineyard out to a negociant in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The contract on the Chambolle vineyard ended in 1978 and 6 years later Frédéric Mugnier, son of Jacques-Frédéric, assumed full responsibility for the family estate.

This gorgeous Nuits-Saint-Georges is from a 20-acre monopole owned by Frédéric Mugnier. For decades, the family sold the fruit from this site to Domaine Faiveley to vinify and bottle, but today they domaine bottle Clos de la Marechale exclusively. Frédéric Mugnier de-stems 100% of the fruit and uses about 20% new wood in the vinification. Burghound Allen Meadows considers Frédéric Mugnier to be a 'very careful taster' and writes favorably on the full range.

This type of wine always needs five to ten years of aging before expressing their typically floral character. The bouquet of the 1er crus of Premeaux is remarkable and persistent; one finds the aroma of iris mingled with raspberries. Even more so, that of white lilac.

Like its 2020 counterpart, this too is wonderfully fresh and perfumed with its array of red raspberry, violet and warm earth where the latter element is reflected by the sleek, delineated and attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that present lovely depth and persistence. Note that while this should easily repay up to a decade of aging, it's not so structured as to be untouchable for the first 5 years or so of its evolution. 90-92 Points.

The 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with scents of red berries, plums, orange rind, sweet spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with powdery tannins and lively acids, it's firmer and chalkier than its Chambolle counterparts, and it will require a bit of patience.
