This estate is owned by the Colosi family in Sicily, and the wine is a blend of Nerello Cappuccio and Nerello Mascalese grapes, 50% each, grown in Salina, one of the Aeolian islands, in the North of Sicily. The original name of the island was the Greek “Didyme” meaning twins, which referred to two volcanoes, Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri present on the island (now inactive). The island’s modern name, “Salina”, refers to a small salty lake situated south of the town of Santa Maria. The grapes and soils here are similar to the more famous Etna region of Sicily.

Sicily is Italy’s southernmost region and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. For more than 2500 years, Sicily (Sicilia in Italian) has been a significant center of Mediterranean viniculture, although the reputation and style of its wines have changed significantly over that time.

Since 1987 Cantine Colosi has been producing native Sicilian wines. Consisting of 24 acres of vineyards in Salina, a small island in the Eolian Archipelago, Colosi occupies an area of the island recognized for both its orientation and for the physical-chemical nature of the soil whose volcanic origins are particularly suitable for vine cultivation. The new winemaking cellar, surrounded by the Malvasia vineyards, was completed in 2004. The winery is located underground in order to have a constant temperature for the optimum care of the wine and to respect the strict preservation rules of the Eolian archipelago. With three generations of experience, Colosi is led by enologist Pietro Colosi in collaboration with his father Piero.

Ideal to pair with meat, pasta with meat sauce, spicy or flavorful dishes and aged cheeses.

The 2018 Rosso Salina, an equal parts blend of Nerello Cappuccio and Nerello Mascalese, has a distinctly Mediterranean flair. Notes of woodland berries, sage, white pepper, salty sea air and animal musk keep you coming back to the glass. It’s silky in texture with ripe red and blue fruits complemented by saline-minerality and juicy acids. There’s a lingering inner sweetness that punctuates the experience nicely, as this finishes up refreshing with hints of raspberry and spice. Colosi has packed a lot of character and pleasure into this easy-drinking and value-oriented red.
