This majestic second growth estate in Pauillac is one of the most esteemed château in the entire Bordeaux region. The estate was originally created by Pierre de Mazur de Rauzan at the end of the XVIIth century. The 80-hectare land (which at the time also included the Château Pichon Longueville Baron) originally extended from Pauillac and Saint-Julien. In 1694, de Rauzan's daughter married the Bordeaux politician Jacques Pichon Longueville, and the estate took the name Pichon. One of Pichon's daughters, the Comtesse de Lalande, became the next-generation owner of the estate. In 1850, the estate was divided into the two current 'Pichon' estates: Pichon Comtesse de Lalande and Pichon Baron. This is the second label of the former.
An enticing nose of blackberry and cedar, with spicy notes of pepper and fresh mint. Delicious on the palate, exhaling raspberry aromas. Equally supple and dense, with pure, fresh fruits. Savoury and with a evolving elegance and long length, thanks to well-integrated tannins.

This second wine represents 41% of the crop. Composed of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Reserve de la Comtesse springs from the glass with vibrant scents of ripe blackcurrants, black raspberries and baked plums, plus suggestions of pencil lead, cedar chest, ground cloves and lilacs. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly crafted with fine-grained tannins and lovely freshness nicely framing the delicate fruit, finishing earthy.

My feeling about the 2018 Réserve de la Comtesse is pretty much the same as it was when I first tasted it en primeur. It is an attractive, gracious wine with plenty of immediacy and appeal, but not the depth of some previous editions. I imagine that mostly reflects the significant presence of young vine fruit here and the uneven quality of the growing season and vintage. I would prefer to drink the 2018 over the next decade or so. -- Antonio Galloni

Bright and juicy, with a mix of red and black currant preserve flavors lined with notes of briar and licorice root, ending with a hint of tobacco. Not large in scale, but has good latent energy. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2028.
