Hexameter is the Cabernet Franc-focused wine from Ovid Napa Valley. The first of Ovid's wines to graduate from the experiment stage to a flagship wine, Hexameter began with the simple inquiry: how compelling can a Cabernet Franc-focused wine from this Napa site be? That early experiment from 2005 produced an intriguing Franc-centric wine, and the next four years were used to refine the wine, particularly honing in on the best blocks within the vineyard.

Hexameter is the poetic meter used by Ovid in his Metamorphoses and, for that matter, in much Greek and Roman epic poetry. The concept of meter was intriguing, as meter contains, animates and organizes the information contained by a poem’s words. Transposed to wine, the vineyard is the impulse behind a poem, and the wine its meter and language. As such, the wine Hexameter reveals a certain rhythm and structure in the Ovid vineyard that articulates its clear and profound affinity for Cabernet Franc.

Poised and eloquent, the 2018 Hexameter overflows with notes of plum, black cherry, violets, pen ink and forest floor, giving way to aromas of cola, boysenberry, molasses and orange blossom. This wine possesses great heft and balance - power and levity that will continue to tell its tale for decades to come.

More blue fruits as well as blackcurrants, leafy tobacco, chocolate, candied flowers, and baking spices all emerge from the 2018 Hexameter, and it's full-bodied, with an incredibly pure, seamless texture, polished tannins, and one heck of a great, great finish. While this is unquestionably a mountain wine, with a building sense of minerality, it has a rare sense of elegance and purity, flawless balance, and is just a heavenly, singular wine. Based on 51% Cabernet Franc, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in 65% new French oak, it will evolve for 25-30 years.

The 2018 Hexameter, Ovid's Cabernet Franc-based wine is stellar. It also shows just how stunning Franc is in these rocky red soils. Effusive aromatics and bright saline notes abound. There is a level of vibrancy to the 2018 that is impossible to miss. Crushed rocks, rose petal, spice, licorice and new leather are some of the notes that race out of the glass. All the best elements of this site come through in a stunning wine that dazzles from start to finish.

Warm and lush in feel, with a loamy tug leading off, followed by steeped black currant and fig fruit flavors inlaid with alder and tobacco accents. Solidly grippy finish lets the loamy edge take the lead. For fans of the more brooding style. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Best from 2022 through 2035. 534 cases made.
