Made by Tenuta Sette Ponti who is renowned for their iconic red wine named Oreno, Crognolo is a rich and complex Super Tuscan red made from stony galestro limestone, sand and clay soils. The vines average 30 years and the wine is aged in French oak for 12-18 months. The intense ruby red color is a prelude to ample aromas of ripe cherries and wild berries, well blended with spicy notes that give the wine class and complexity. Round, distinctly harmonious and vibrant on the palate, it shows depth and perfect tannins.

In the 1950s architect Alberto Moretti Cuseri acquired the first 55 hectares of land directly from the princesses Margherita and Maria Cristina of Savoy d'Aosta, daughters of Prince Amedeo of Savoy Duke of Aosta. In these lands he devoted himself to his greatest passions: the production of wine and olive oil and hunting. Thanks to the great vocation of this territory, he began to take care of the vineyards producing grapes for sale to producers, without vinifying them.

In the 1990s his son Antonio Moretti Cuseri, moved by a passion and an interest in the world of wine that he had since he was young, took control of his father's company and was supported by the best specialized technicians (winemakers and oenologists) to evaluate the vocation of the land to the production of quality wines, thus starting his wine project. He then stopped selling the grapes to other producers and in 1998 he released the first label: Crognolo, which has as its basis the historic variety of Sangiovese from clones of the oldest vineyard on the estate, Vigna dell'Impero.

Tenuta Sette Ponti is a name that evokes the Seven Bridges over the Arno river on the road that leads from Florence to Arezzo, one of which, the Buriano, also present in the famous painting Gioconda by Leonardo Da Vinci. 1999 saw the release of the first vintage of Oreno, a wine that after only three harvests reached the top of the most important world rankings. An in-depth study that together with the love for the vineyard and for the ancient knowledge of the wine art has allowed in a short time to reach a very high quality, with vineyards treated in an organic regime and in full harmony with the traditions of the territory.

A soft and caressing red with a full body and plush, finely woven tannins. Plenty of dark cherry, mulberry, chocolate and some bark. Citrus zest and dried flowers, too. Lightly chewy at the end.

New to the Place de Bordeaux this year, the second wine to the flagship Oreno. This is darkly scented with a floral-touched nose, blackcurrants, violet potpourri and liquorice. So juicy and seductive on the palate, this has a depth which is beguiling, layering the dark fruit, herbal and salty flavours on the tongue - a sweet, sticky almost liquorice blackcurrant added to by a black pepper and minty aftertaste giving some minerality to the palate. Nicely structured and round. This is ample and fresh - easy to drink with lots to like. Ageing for 12-14 months in tonneaux and barriques.
