The oldest winery continuously operating in the northern Rhône, Vidal Fleury was founded in 1781 as a wine grower and proprietor of vineyards in the Côte Rôtie. Thomas Jefferson’s visit in 1787 was its first contact with the United States; he called the wines “justly celebrated”. Founder Joseph Vidal strove to produce wines that expressed the typicity of the various soils and to achieve the highest degree of quality possible. True to the founder's goals. the winery continues to produce wines that are the finest expression of their appellation. Today Vidal Fleury offers a comprehensive range of red, white and rosé wines from the Rhône Valley. Recognizing the enormous potential of Vidal Fleury and the value of its brand, renowned Rhône winemaker (and Vidal's neighbor) Marcel Guigal bought the company in 1984. In 2006 Vidal-Fleury began investing to modernize its winery facilities, installing state-of-the-art technology; in 2008, it built a new cellar specifically dedicated to maturing the wines. In addition, Vidal-Fleury’s vineyards are overseen with 100% self-sustaining management practices. Vidal-Fleury carries on under the watchful management of Head Winemaker Guy Sarton du Jonchay.

Sourced from two of the most revered parcels of the entire Rhône Valley, this Côte Rôtie is made from steep, terraced vineyards rising high above the Rhône River. Côte Blonde owes its name to the light soils of gneiss and silica gravel with clay, while the Côte Brune to the north contains darker soil of mica, schist, iron and a higher proportion of clay.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested and transported to the winery in small crates. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in temperature controlled tanks with the maceration period lasting approximately 3 weeks with frequent pumping over. The wine is aged on its lees for a total of 3 years in a combination of new and used oak barrels as well as large oak casks. The finished wine is very lightly filtered (cross flow) and not fined. The wines rest in bottle for a minimum of 6 months prior to release.

Moving to the Côte Rôties, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Brune Et Blonde De Vidal-Fleury is terrific, and this is a great vintage for the region. Black raspberries, dried flowers, savory meats, and spice all dominate the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. I suspect this will be a smoking value and keep for 10-12 years.

Bold aromas of blackberry, black plum, cassis, violet and wild mint penetrate a firm stone bed and fresh potting soil. The palate is focused, with lush black fruit and black olives, intertwined with a harmony of violets, garrigue, underbrush, pink peppercorn and dried earth.

The 2019 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde is a strong effort, with far greater elegance than many of the house's other offerings. Subtle notes of dried minty herbs and crushed stone accent blueberry fruit on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is concentrated, silky and long on the finish. 92
