The Damilano name carries with it more than 100 years of winemaking history in the heart of Italy's dynamic and prestigious wine zone; Barolo. Damilano was founded in 1890, when Giuseppe Borgogno started cultivating grapes and producing wine from his own vineyards. Giacomo Damilano, the founder’s son-in-law, took over the winery operation in 1935. Giacomo grew the business, and improved the general quality of both the vinification system and the vineyards, turning the winery into a jewel of the Langhe area. The results of his hard work were passed down with great pride to his grandchildren Paolo, Mario and Guido in 1997 who then gave new vigor to the family company and they are still working to maintain and improve quality in the vineyards. The Damilano name stands, not only for longevity, but for top quality. Aside from their world-class vineyard holdings, the Damilano family operates a Michelin-starred restaurant in La Morra.
Damilano's vineyards occupy some of the most world-renowned sites in Barolo. On what is perhaps the most historically important sites of all, the hill of Cannubi, Damilano owns one of the largest sections in the core of the hill and nearly all of the section just to the west, known as Cannubi Valletta. The Damilano crus Cannubi, Brunate, Cerequio and Liste have distinct expressions that showcase the differences in terroir, ranging from the innate elegance of Cannubi and Brunate to the more decisive and structured character of Cerequio and Liste.
In addition to these four famed single vineyard crus, Damilano produces this wine, the Barolo 'Lecinquevigne', a blend of five vineyards from three different towns: Barolo, Grinzane Cavour and Monforte where the Nebbiolo grape is King. The soils are calcareous and clay, the vines are trained with the guyot method, and the high elevation is at 1,050 feet with a Southeastern exposure.

There are plenty of savory notes-eucalyptus, juniper and thyme-reconciled by cherry and earth flavors in this red, which shows a midpalate sweetness before the pointed tannins emerge. The finish is long and satisfying. Best from 2023 through 2040. 5,000 cases made, 2,500 cases imported.

This is a blend of the five vineyard sites farmed by Damilano, and if you look at the single-vineyard wines in this portfolio, you see Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi and Raviole. The 2016 Barolo Lecinquevigne offers a 360-degree view of Barolo with pretty primary fruit backed by elegant tannins and mid-weight fruit fiber. The wine is a happy sum of its various parts, and as expected, you can't really make out the characteristics of any one unique growing site. That's exactly the philosophy behind a blended wine like Lecinquevigne. The wine ages in large oak casks for 24 months. Some 60,000 bottles were made, and you get good value here.

Pressed rose, woodland-berry and menthol aromas take center stage. It's full bodied and tense, offering dried cherry, cranberry and licorice framed in tight fine-grained tannins that leave a drying close. Drink 2024-2031.

Lecinquevigne is produced from five vineyards in the communes of Barolo, Grinzane Cavour, and Monforte, and was aged for 24 months in large barrels of 20-100 hectoliters. The 2016 Barolo Lecinquevigne has classic aromas of tar, dried leather, cherry, and violets. Its structure is up-front, with tannic grip and driving acidity, fresh cranberry, orange rind, and clove. The 2016 is tightly wound and will benefit from cellaring 3-5 years. Drink 2024-2042.
