Located out of the Combe des Vallerots and on top of the renowned parcel of the "Saint Georges", the Gouges estate's parcel is right in the middle of the hillside, defined on its higher part by the forest borders. The production of grapes is naturally very low: when tasting, these are intense wines, characteristic of their terroir through freshness and minerality. Vaucrains is an exceptional long-keeping wine, which requires a dozen years to reveal its full potential.

For nearly a century, generations of the Gouges family have taken turns to highlight the wines of Nuits Saint Georges. First Henri Gouges, then Michel and Marcel; who were then followed by Pierre and Christian, and now Grégory and Antoine. Experts of the Pinot Noir, this estate tends 14 hectares of vines, exclusively in Nuits St Georges. The straight forward, intense, consistent, and authentic Burgundy wines produced here have made the high reputation of the estate. The production volume is related to the climatic conditions, and the growing method focuses on quality and respect of the terroirs at the expense of the quantity.

One of the denser and more concentrated wines in the Gouges line up in 2017, this comes from a 0.98ha site on famously poor soils. Showing good texture and weight with sweet raspberry and black cherry fruit, it's supported by acidity, medium-weight tannins and a spicy finish. Drinking Window 2022 - 2028.

Slightly riper aromas of plum liqueur, violet, warm earth and plenty of sauvage character lead to intense and notably dense broad-shouldered flavors that display first-rate power on the serious and youthfully austere finish. This is a big wine in the context of what is typical for the 2017 vintage and should age effortlessly. 91-93

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has a light bouquet of brambly red fruit and rose petal scents, though it needs a little more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied and smooth in texture, with black plum and cranberry notes and rounded, thick tannins that lend good body. A touch of white pepper and spicebox appears toward the finish. Promising. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.
