The Pieve Santa Restituta estate was acquired by the Gaja family in 1994. The white rocky soils of this area, in the southwest subzone of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, were abandoned long ago by the sharecropper mezzadri farmers. But while other crops struggled in the rugged, nutrient-poor terrain, it has proven ideal for the cultivation of grapes destined to become fine wine. Look for deep ruby red color fading to a dark pink rim. An expressive nose with cherry notes, forest fruits, aromatic herbs, and juniper aromas. On the palate, this Brunello di Montalcino expresses ripe tannins, integrated acidity, rich structure and a lingering finish.

VinousFull ruby-red. Aromas of red cherry, blackberry, licorice and minerals. Juicy and tightly wound but pliant, offering smooth black and red fruit flavors complicated by licorice and fresh herbs. Classically dry and long, finishing with supple but firm tannins and a bright floral element. It’s hard to argue with this entry-level Brunello’s quality. I find it to be slightly underrated in many vintages, as all the attention is focused on Gaja’s two top Brunellos, the Rennina and the Sugarille. But this non-cru Brunello offers lots of high-quality wine for the price.
