Vidal-Fleury

Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury is the Rhône Valley’s oldest continuing winery. Thomas Jefferson’s visit in 1787 was its first contact with the United States; he called the wines “justly celebrated”. During the 1890s, Gustave Vidal married a daughter of the Fleury family. Together they replanted the vineyard following the phylloxera outbreak. Then, in the 1920s, the House expanded into other wine-growing regions throughout the Rhône Valley. In 1984, the famed Guigal estate acquired the company. This step was a logical continuation for the Vidal-Fleury and Guigal families, who had always worked together. Indeed, Etienne Guigal (Marcel’s father) was hired as a vine-grower and cellar master by Joseph Vidal-Fleury in 1924. When the Vidal-Fleury family decided to sell the House, they naturally turned to the Guigal family. As result, the company remains family-run. Vidal-Fleury is managed in absolute independence with its own winemaking, logistics and commercial team.

In 2006 Vidal-Fleury began investing to modernize its winery facilities, installing state-of-the-art technology; in 2008, it built a new cellar specifically dedicated to maturing the wines. In addition, Vidal-Fleury’s vineyards are overseen with 100% self-sustaining management practices. Long considered one of the most respected producers in the Rhône Valley, Vidal-Fleury carries on under the watchful management of Head Winemaker Guy Sarton du Jonchay.

We are so excited to welcome Bastien Lartigue as our VIP guest of honor for this exceptional tasting. Born and raised in the northern Rhône Valley, Bastien has worked for the Vidal-Fleury winery since the tender age of 15. His father has worked with the firm for decades, and now his son has arrived in the United States to be their Brand Ambassador. We met this knowledgeable young French man and look forward to tasting Vidal-Fleury wines again with him and our guests. The wines to be poured will include : Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc, Ventoux Red, Saint-Joseph and Côte-Rôtie red.

Cheers!! the Murray family

J. Vidal-Fleury Saint-Joseph 2018 750ml

jd 92 we 91 wa 90

Sourced from steep slopes along the Rhône River made up of granite soils with schist and gneiss. Vineyard elevations between 200-400 meters with an ideal southern exposure. Vinification: Grapes are machine and hand harvested and transported to the winery in small crates. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in temperature controlled tanks with the maceration period lasting approximately 3 weeks. We tasted and loved this St. Jo with its hint of nutmeg and clove in the nose mingling with red and black fruits. On the palate, this is a little earthy but perfectly ripe, and makes you crave red meat. Aged 12 months in 10% new oak, the rest in one or two year barrels. The finished wine is very lightly filtered (cross flow) and not fined. The wines rest in bottle for a minimum of 4 months prior to release.

J. Vidal-Fleury Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde 2019 750ml

we 94 jd 94 wa 92

RATED 94 WINE ENTHUSIAST : Sourced from two of the most revered parcels of the entire Rhône Valley, this Côte Rôtie is made from steep, terraced vineyards rising high above the Rhône River. Côte Blonde owes its name to the light soils of gneiss and silica gravel with clay, while the Côte Brune to the north contains darker soil of mica, schist, iron and a higher proportion of clay.  'Bold aromas of blackberry, black plum, cassis, violet and wild mint penetrate a firm stone bed and fresh potting soil. The palate is focused, with lush black fruit and black olives, intertwined with a harmony of violets, garrigue, underbrush, pink peppercorn and dried earth.'
