He recognized early on that America's old vine plantings of Red Zinfandel were important to save and nurture; he wanted to make wines for American wine drinkers that were delicious, meaningful and affordable; and he made wines with natural yeasts and less potent French oak barrels to lend balance to his bold flavors.
