You really do not get any more 'ALL AMERICAN' than Ravenswood Wines. 'The Godfather of Zin', founder Joel Peterson, coined the term 'No Wimpy Wines!' back in the late 1970's, long before the critics were clamoring for intense, full-bodied reds to give big scores to. A provocative winemaker with a brilliant mind, Joel has a degree in microbiology that led him to a career in cancer immunology research before pursuing his wine making dreams full-time in 1992. The son of two chemists, Joel grew up in California tasting classic European with his dad's wine club, and essentially wound up being one of the most influential producers of American wine in history. He recognized early on that America's old vine plantings of Red Zinfandel were important to save and nurture; he wanted to make wines for American wine drinkers that were delicious, meaningful and affordable; and he made wines with natural yeasts and less potent French oak barrels to lend balance to his bold flavors. The first two wines below are really special and unbelievable at these prices. Peterson has worked with Belloni Vineyard for 25+ years, and the Big River boasts 100 year old vines on the Russian River/Alexander Valley border. Do six and six for future side-by-sides. And finally for the perfect duo of BBQ reds, snatch up the Vintner's Blend Zin and/or Cabernet for $9.99/bottle.  HAPPY SPRING!!!

Cheers! the Murray family

Ravenswood Belloni Zinfandel 2014

we 90

RATED 90 WINE ENTHUSIAST : 'This is a peppery, plummy wine with plenty of grip on the palate. Structured and meaty, it rides its ripeness with ease, showing a taste of vanilla soda on the finish. Mixed black grapes account for 25% of the whole and originate from vines planted around 1900.' Belloni is a small (7.5 acres) vineyard in Sonoma's Russian River Valley that produces precious, concentrated low yielding quantities of fruit.

Ravenswood Big River Vineyard Zinfandel 2012

ws 91

RATED 91 WINE SPECTATOR : 'Big and ripe, focused and complex, with bold black cherry and toasty spice aromas leading to jammy flavors of raspberry, mocha and spicy licorice. Drink now through 2022. Only 1,008 cases made.' Straddling the Alexander Valley and Russian River appellations, the Big River Vineyard has the benefit of both climates: a moderating riparian influence tempers the site’s fog-free warmth, and looming Fitch Mountain, shields the vineyard from westerly winds. Big River is a 13-acre, 100-year-old vineyard.

Ravenswood Vintners Blend Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

For years we have been telling our clients that although Ravenswood is most well-known for Zinfandel, the winery is a terrific source for this everyday Cabernet. It is hands down one of the best buys for tasty Cabs at the Bottle Shop. The goal of Ravenswood's Vintners Blend series is to showcase up-front fruit, attractive youthfulness, and nice complexities. Winemaker Joel Peterson also believes that Cabernet Sauvignon should exhibit rich currant and cassis flavors with fine, soft tannins and subtle oak notes. This is balanced and round, with quite a long finish. Serve with burgers, steaks and Mexican fare.
