There are so many cool and exciting things to say about this wine... so where do we start? First off, the Caiarossa estate is located in the Cecina Valley, in the Pisa area of coastal Tuscany, about an hour north of Bolgheri, where the 'Super Tuscan' phenomena was born out of the creation of wines like Sassicaia and Ornellaia. The vineyard was purchased in 1998 by the owners of Châteaux Giscours and du Tertre in Margaux, certified organic in 2003, certified biodynamic in 2005, and the estate has been subtly releasing beautiful red blends under-the-radar for the last decade with a label depicting the head of Dionysus, Greek God of wine. The vineyard is breathtakingly beautiful (***click here for video ***) in a very rural area away from 'Tuscan tourism'. The locals call the Val di Cecina 'il Giardino', the Garden, which is thought of as a reference to Eden. Occupying higher ground than Bolgheri, there is a different microclimate, and the vineyard is planted to a variety of grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Alicante. The resulting style is one of ripeness, depth and polish, coupled with freshness, energy and Tuscan soul. The luxurious hand of its Margaux-influenced breeding makes this not only a beautiful wine to drink, but also a wine of great value. Caiarossa is about 1/4 the price of highly sought after Super Tuscans. Also, the vintage is very important :: 2015 is the best Tuscan vintage since 1997, the highest rated with 97 points, and it's both a near-term and long-term drinking vintage.
