We love this trio of delicious, value-priced reds from Veneto! Located in northeastern Italy, Veneto is home to the famed Amarone and Valpolicella red wines as well as high quality Soave Classico whites. First up we have an Amarone Classico by Cielo, a 4th generation estate making traditional reds from the local Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella grapes. Rich and sultry with very smooth tannins, this is amazing with authentic Italian foods like osso buco, pasta bolognese, pizza, cheeses, salumi & more. And it's an insane buy at $29.99! (Bertani Amarone is $125/bottle!).
Next up from a 7th generation estate, in addition to crafting small batch Amarone, the Speri family makes this gorgeous Ripasso red by passing the juice of the Valpolicella over the lees of the Amarone. This Ripasso method is unique to Veneto and makes a wine that can be consumed earlier (much like in Tuscany, making Brunello di Montalcino for cellaring, and then Rosso di Montalcino for drinking. Ripasso is the 'Rosso'). Rated 93, the Speri 2020 Ripasso is currently one of our favorite reds on the Italian rack, and a real bargain @ $24.99. Our third red is another Ripasso from the famed Cesari estate. Rated 91 by Suckling, this $16.99-er is a no-brainer!
