Meet Decanter magazine's 'Rising Star of Rioja' ~ Javier Arizcuren
When we first tasted the wines of Arizcuren, we were blown away by their complexity, textures and depth of flavor. Not knowing as much about Rioja Baja, as we knew of Rioja Alta, it was intriguing and inspirational to learn of Javier Arizcuren's commitment to his native region of 'Baja' (locally called Rioja Oriental) and its distinctive terroir. By working with very old, low yielding vines planted at high altitudes, Javier, an architect who designed & built wineries for decades, is now showcasing his family's mountain vineyards.
These low-yielding vines, some of which are up to 130 years old at very high elevations of up to 2600 feet, are farmed organically, using grazing herds instead of herbicides and pesticides, and vinified with spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention. We can't wait to share these beautiful wines with you and introduce you to this passionate winegrower. We are so grateful that he has agreed to visit our small village of Spring Lake and conduct a special tasting for our clients. Please stop by anytime between 4 - 6 pm. We will start with a thirst quenching dry white from Javier's importer, and then taste Javier's exceptional reds.

This comes from an 80 year-old vineyard called Foro composed of sandy soils at 2000’ elevation and is much less austere than some expressions of the grape, with its firm tannins sweetened by blackberry and blueberry fruit. Concentrated yet well balanced. Drink 2024-2030.'

Its intense nose of wild berries, ripe figs, thyme and lavender leads to a smooth, luscious palate with textured savory notes, silky tannins, balanced freshness and a ripe finish.' 'A fruity, elegant and poised red with notes of baked cherries, raspberries, blueberries and mild spices. Medium body with bright acidity. Juicy and succulent with a transparent character and salivating finish. Drink or hold.'

Barco Del Corneta Cucú Verdejo 2022 750ml |

In 2008, Beatriz Herranz and her mom, María, planted 5.5 hectares of Verdejo on old family land 2500 feet above sea level in the village of La Seca, Valladolid, in the Cantarranas estate and Barco del Corneta was born. Today Barco del Corneta is certified organic. The vineyards are fertilized naturally, no insecticides are used and grapes are harvested by hand. A first selection is made in the vineyard and a second one in the winery. Once the bunches are pressed, the must ferments in barrels with wild yeasts. Barco del Corneta is aged on its lees in 300, 500 and 600-liter French oak barrels, mostly used. After a very gentle fining and filtering, the wine rests in bottles for a few months before release. The wines are bottled under the Castilla y León DO. The result is an easy-to-drink yet complex Verdejo. Cucù is so scrumptious with fresh, juicy apricot skin & citrus flavors, white flower, moss & saline nuances. We love it!!!
