Tenuta dell'Ornellaia believes in the terroir of the soil which translates into special flavors and complexities in its wines. The Masseto vineyard, for example, has three different soils, including a unique clay which is ideal for growing Merlot. On the Tuscan coast, in a land that beheld the splendor of the Etruscans, you will find Bolgheri, home of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. From the low hilly landscape, topped with cypresses and the heavy scented perfumes of the Mediterranean, to the resting spots of migratory birds and the dense woodlands that slope gently to the sea, this landscape provides varying soils and micro-climates perfect for making extraordinary wine. Masseto is a rare and exclusive Cru, made entirely from Merlot grapes grown on the 7 ha vineyard bearing the same name. Its first vintage was 1986, and it has gained a reputation as one of the world's most sought after wines. Masseto has an exotic nose with big ripe black fruits and minerals. On the palate it's powerful, rich, and opulent, with big, sweet, polished tannins and a super long finish.

VinousOnce again, Masseto shows why it is one of the world\'s truly great wines. Vibrant and nuanced in the glass, the 2012 possesses magnificent complexity to match its textured, inviting personality. Black cherry, espresso, smoke and licorice meld into the creamy, resonant finish. The 2012 is not a huge Masseto, but rather a wine that convinces with its exceptional balance. In 2012, I give Masseto a slight edge over Ornellaia. Conversely, in 2011, it was the opposite.

Wine AdvocateThe 2012 Masseto is seductive from the first sip. The 2011 edition of this wine was very successful, and not too different in character from this wine. What the 2012 vintage offers instead is a level of textural richness and creaminess that is absolutely outstanding. The very nature of the fruit feels velvety and silky smooth, without a single ripple. The bouquet reveals upfront aromas of dark cherry and spice that are contrasted perfectly against one another. Classic vintages of Masseto include 2001 and 2006. The 2012 vintage doesn't offer the same backbone firmness as those years, but it offers lots more exuberant richness instead. Some 32,000 bottles were produced. The wine should hold forward for many, many years.

Wine SpectatorDesignation Collectibles. A serious red, from the intense aromas of black cherry, blackberry, plum, spice and mineral to the concentrated flavor profile and complex structure. The vibrant finish shows terrific length. All the components are there, but this just needs some time to come together. Merlot. Best from 2018 through 2030. 320 cases imported.
