In the words of winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson: Bedrock Wine Co. firmly believes in the philosophy that “diversity is the spice of life.” The wines Twain-Peterson makes are not limited to a single caste or single style. Rather, they reflect his own eclectic tastes and general feeling that a broad palate makes for more interesting gustatory experiences. Bedrock is a very small winery making wine in a converted chicken coop. Fruit from only the most excellent vineyard sites is hand pitch-forked into the destemmer, fermented in open top redwood and stainless vats using only native yeasts, and are manually basket pressed by the winemaker into oak made from the coldest French forests.
Made with native yeast fermentations with a combination of punch downs and pump overs and aged in all French oak, 12% new, this Zinfandel is a perfect example of the Bedrock style. Though it is legally a Zinfandel, and labeled as such, it is also a Bedrock wine so it has its full quotient of the wacky, weird and wonderful as well - nearly 23% Carignane, Mourvedre, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Abouriou, Aubun, and assorted mixed white varieties. The 2015 was a Top 100 Wine of the Year.
Bedrock Old Vine is typically a blend of 85% Zinfandel filled out with Mataro, Grenache, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, Petite Sirah and scant amounts of the many other varieties that can be found in California’s older, multifarious vineyards. Many of Bedrock's most venerable vineyards contribute to this wine, including Bedrock, Teldeschi, Esola, Pagani, Papera, Evangelho and Pato filled in with lots from other old vineyards throughout the state. This will provide great drinking pleasure with a decant early on, but as with most iterations of this bottling, will develop nicely for a number of years.

Dynamic and generous, this Zin combines old-school briar with sleek suppleness, serving up stylish flavors of raspberry and cherry accented by savory pepper, cinnamon and garrigue tones that sail on the rich finish.

The 2022 Zinfandel Old Vine is an absolute delight. Fresh, floral, and fruity, the Old Vine is a terrific wine to drink now and over the next handful of years, while the fruit remains vibrant. Dollops of Carignan, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Cinsault, and other varieties round out a blend crafted from a number of top sites in the Bedrock portfolio. The Old Vine Zinfandel is especially vibrant and refreshing this year. Best if all, it should be terrific value.
