Bedrock Wine Co. Old Vine Zinfandel 2018
In the words of winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson: Bedrock Wine Co. firmly believes in the philosophy that “diversity is the spice of life.” The wines Twain-Peterson makes are not limited to a single caste or single style. Rather, they reflect his own eclectic tastes and general feeling that a broad palate makes for more interesting gustatory experiences. Bedrock is a very small winery making wine in a converted chicken coop. Fruit from only the most excellent vineyard sites is hand pitch-forked into the destemmer, fermented in open top redwood and stainless vats using only native yeasts, and are manually basket pressed by the winemaker into oak made from the coldest French forests.
Made with native yeast fermentations with a combination of punch downs and pump overs and aged in all French oak, 12% new, this Zinfandel is a perfect example of the Bedrock style. Though it is legally a Zinfandel, and labeled as such, it is also a Bedrock wine so it has its full quotient of the wacky, weird and wonderful as well - nearly 23% Carignane, Mourvedre, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Abouriou, Aubun, and assorted mixed white varieties. The 2015 was a Top 100 Wine of the Year.
2018 was a brilliant year for Zinfandel across California, and this wine reflects it. The 2018 is a blend of 85% Zinfandel filled out with Mataro, Grenache, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, Petite Sirah and scant amounts of the many other varieties that can be found in California’s older, multifarious vineyards. Many of Bedrock's most venerable vineyards contribute to this wine, including Bedrock, Teldeschi, Esola, Pagani, Papera, Evangelho and Pato filled in with lots from other old vineyards throughout the state. This will provide great drinking pleasure with a decant early on, but as with most iterations of this bottling, will develop nicely for a number of years.

VinousThe 2018 Zinfandel Old Vine is bright, floral and beautifully perfumed. Crushed red berries, flowers and sweet spice give the 2018 a very pretty sense of lift. In 2018, the Old Vine is especially gracious and light on its feet. The blend incorporates fruit from a number of top sites, including Bedrock, Teldeschi, Esola, Pagani, Papera, Evangelho and Pato. Drinking window: 2020 - 2030
Wine EnthusiastTempting fruit flavors and an appetizing structure combine nicely in this full-bodied wine, making it taste and feel complete. Classic blackberry and black-pepper aromas give way to juicy, berrylike flavors wrapped in just-firm-enough tannins and acidity for a good grip on the palate.
Wine SpectatorPlump and zesty, with lively raspberry and smoked pepper flavors that speed toward lively tannins. Drink now through 2024.
