Giancarlo Pacenti is a young Montalcinese who is a staunch proponent of a modern approach to making Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino. His fame has grown over the last decade in the press and among consumers. Pacenti, who took over his family's estate in 1988, ages his wines entirely in small barriques, versus the larger barrels which are common in Montalcino. He aims to make clean, rich and intense wines to compete with the best wines in the world. His fruit is sourced from two family-owned vineyards in different areas of Montalcino: one to the NE of town, where the vineyards provide fragrance, silkiness and soft tannins; and the other in the warmer SW area near Sant'Angelo in Colle, known for full-bodied, powerful and structured wines. This combination of terroir gives his wines balance, richness and beauty.

The Pelagrilli is made of
100% Sangiovese coming from 25 year old vines on the northern side of Montalcino... Hand-harvested, and rigorously selected by hand both before and after the destemming. Ages 24 months in French oak barriques.

Wine AdvocateThe 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli is a fantastic wine made from some of the estate's most promising vines. Still relatively young in age, the vines behind the Pelagrilli selection show delicate floral nuances mixed in with bright red fruit, spice and balsam herb. The wine is elaborate and compelling thanks to warm aromas of wet earth or white truffle that emerges from the bouquet. Pretty layers of smoke and crushed granite appear on the close.
