Lioco is the passion project of Matt Licklider (a seasoned wine import specialist and California native) and his good friend Kevin O’Connor (former wine director at Spago-Beverly Hills). They set out to prove that California could produce a true 'wine of origin' as they would in Europe. Inspired by traditional European winegrowing practices, they sought out vineyard sites with tougher soil, older vines, and some stress-producing aspect (altitude, extreme temperature, poor soil, etc). Under winemaker John Raytek of Ceritas, the grapes are shepherded from bud to bottle in the least intrusive way possible producing focused, balanced Chardonnay and Pinot Noir coming from such storied vineyards as Hirsch, Demuth, and Hanzell.Wine Advocate raves about Lioco: 'Lioco Chardonnay Sonoma County is one of the best American Chardonnays readers will find for the money. Lemon, white flowers and crushed rocks are all very much alive in a Chardonnay that impresses for its varietal trueness, polish and overall balance. If I were looking for a value-priced California Chardonnay to buy by the case, Proprietors Matt Licklider and Kevin O-Connor have done a fabulous job with these new releases. In particular, I am a huge fan of the budget-priced wines in this range, as we all need daily drinkers. Two of these wines from Lioco fit that bill and do it with unusual elegance.'
