Robert Parker praises winemaker Hobbs : 'Paul Hobbs is one of the most brilliant consultants working in California, and he is well-placed in Argentina with a number of projects there as well. His empire is in the Russian River, and it continues to expand, with a bevy of artisinal hand-made Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Cabernet Sauvignons, and more recently, Syrahs. These are full-throttle wines that merit serious attention.'

Look for a deep violet color in this elegant Pinot Noir with aromas of black raspberry, violets, sassafras, clove and cocoa butter. Juicy red fruits, earl gray tea, hazelnut and damp red clay flavors complement its velvet-like texture and long finish.

Robert Parker: 'My tasting notes on these same Pinot Noir cuvées in 2013 revealed slightly smaller production numbers, and wines with more crisp acids, perhaps not the flesh and fat of the 2012s, but stylistically, they are more elegant and feminine whereas the 2012s are more meaty, concentrated and powerful. All the 2013 Pinot Noirs appear to be very good, with my favorites being the Agustina Katherine Lindsay Estate and the Ulises Valdez Vineyard. Paul Hobbs is undoubtedly one of the world’s finest consultants, and as Americans we’re lucky to have this New York State-born winemaking guru right in the heart of the Russian River, turning out a bevy of wines from both Napa (reviewed in issue 215) and the following items from their estate vineyards in Sonoma as well as from purchased fruit. Hobbs has a separate entity now, which is aimed at producing good value wines under the Cross Barn by Paul Hobbs moniker. There’s some juicy, high-quality stuff in these cuvées.'

The largest production cuvée is the 2018 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, which comes from multiple sites and was aged 9 months in 43% new French oak. Readers looking for a great introduction into the wines of the estate can't go wrong here. Medium ruby, it has beautiful aromatics of raspberries, black cherries, and strawberries, loads of spice, violets, and underbrush nuances, medium to full body, good acidity, and a silky, seamless texture. It's beautifully done and well worth seeking out. Drink it any time over the coming 7-8 years.

Concentrated red currant, plum and raspberry flavors are finely articulated, with ample hot stone and cooking spice notes. Crunchy acidity on the finish features accents of dried thyme. Drink now through 2025. 7,612 cases made.

Made with about 10% whole cluster, the 2018 Pinot Noir has a medium ruby-purple color and a nose of cranberry sauce, rhubarb, tea leaves and earth with a spicy undercurrent. Medium-bodied, it's concentrated and grainy with appealing juicy fruits and a long, lifted finish. 7,612 cases produced.

The 2018 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) will show readers just how immensely appealing the 2018 vintage is for Pinot Noir. Rich, boisterous and inviting, the 2018 has so much to offer. An explosion of floral and spice notes leads to a core of juicy fruit as this super-expressive, inviting Pinot shows off its considerable allure. It is a real overachiever in this range.

Blueberries, brambleberries, elderberries, raspberry fool and crushed violets. I love the firm tannins, bright acidity and herbal undertones. Drink now or hold.
