Founded in 1854 by Generals William "Tecumseh" Sherman and General "Fightin’ Joel" Hooker, Bedrock Vineyard has grown grapes for over 150 years. Following the first epidemic of phylloxera in the mid-1880’s, the vineyard was replanted in 1888 by Senator George Hearst - a mining magnet, an early father of California, and the father of publisher William Randolph Hearst. It is from those 125 year old vines that the Bedrock Heritage Wine is crafted. The Bedrock Vineyard Heritage Wine comes from current owner Morgan Twain Peterson's family vineyard in the heart of Sonoma Valley. Composed of over 22 interplanted varieties, the Bedrock Vineyard Heritage Wine is the wine that Peterson started the winery to make. The piece of rock strewn red clay soils produced a wine of citrus-tinged red fruits and spice. The 2013 is made of 55% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, and the remainder being co-fermented of Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Mourvedre, Grand Noir, Trousseau Noir, Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah, Tempranillo, Castets, etc. etc. These red hill clay loam soils of the vineyard were planted in the 1880's, and today, it is sustainably farmed.

Wine AdvocatePossibly the flagship wine is the 2015 Proprietary Red The Bedrock Heritage. This ancient vineyard is planted with 27 different varieties, so I won't even begin to list them, as that is a book in itself. This is Rhône Valley-like, with notes of Mediterranean herbs, blackberries, blueberries, loamy soil notes, incense, creosote, steak tartare and pepper followed by a wine of great intensity - built like a skyscraper, with layers of fruit and extraction. It is a sensational effort, super-complex, and best drunk over the next decade
