The Mocali estate, acquired by the Ciacci family in the 1950s, is a setting of natural Tuscan beauty where vineyards and olive groves alternate with oak and pine forests. This harmony of man and nature comes through in the delicious, ripe and balanced wines produced at this certified organic estate, available at prices that are incredibly low when compared to those of the more established producers of Montalcino. The wines are particularly approachable when young, well-structured with ample body and an elegant, minerally character distinct to this growing area. Situated to the southwest of Montalcino at an altitude of 300-350 meters above sea-level on the slopes facing Castiglione del Bosco, the Mocali estate is comprised of 32 hectares, with vineyards and olive groves. The soil is rendered highly mineral; salt owing to the presence of marl and limestone.
The first vintage of Mocali Brunello was 1990 – quite an auspicious start! Back then, average production was just 500 cases, but today, Tiziano and Alessandra farm 20 hectares in Montalcino and make about 5000 cases of Brunello. In 2000, the couple replenished their olive groves with a purchase just outside Montalcino in Monticello Amiata. And in 2001, they bought 20 hectares of land in the Maremma, in Magliano in Toscana. Despite their growth, the estate is still family-run. Tiziano and Alessandra’s daughter, Pamela, has recently joined the business, and together they oversee all aspects of production.

A succulent red, with an underlying touch of licorice, along with macerated cherry, menthol and wild herb flavors. This is balanced and fairly open now, yet with ample grip to develop over the medium term. Shows terrific harmony. Mineral-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2028 through 2043

Restrained aromas of red cherries, raspberries, dried flowers, licorice, prunes and tobacco. Full-bodied, juicy and savory, it shows a very tasty palate with velvety tannins and a chalky, refreshing finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is expressive in the glass, with notes of crushed black cherries, sage, mint, cedar shavings and white smoke forming its inviting bouquet. It soothes the senses with silken textures and cool-toned acidity, as ripe plums and wild berries sweep across the palate. Edgy tannins envelop the palate with youthful poise. The 2021 finishes long and spicy, leaving a pleasantly bitter tinge to linger.

Framed by an earthy, dusty mineral tone, the Mocali 2021 Brunello di Montalcino delivers pressed blackberry and plum followed by spice and spent ember in a bold, upfront style. A hint of sweetness on the palate softens the texture and keeps the tannins accessible, though the wine ultimately feels fairly one-dimensional on the close. Aging takes place over two years in French oak botte followed by one year in large Slavonian oak casks, an élevage that clearly defines the estate™s stylistic imprint.
