This red is from the south of France in the Roussillon region, from a region named Maury, which is west of the Rhône and planted to similar grape varieties such as Grenache, Syrah and Carignan. These grapes go into more well-known reds like Côtes-du-Rhônes and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here you will see on the label: Maury Sec, which means Dry Maury, because the appellation, which neighbors the only-slightly-more-well-known, Banyuls, was traditionally known for fortified reds, more similar to Port in style, than they were known for dry table reds. However, today we are seeing a new trend in the region for the contemporary taste and style, and this red is a blockbuster example. Pair with similar fare as you would with flavorful Rhônes, like grilled red meats, stews, roasts, cheeses, pâté, hints of Provence herbs and dark, spicy olives.

Wine AdvocateThe 2013 Maury Sec Serge & Nicolas is a blockbuster that goes screaming past its humble price point. Made from a blend of 60% unoaked Grenache and 28% Syrah and 12% Carignan aged in 500-liter demi-muids, it boasts tons of kirsch, peppery herbs, licorice and hints of crushed flowers to go with a full-bodied, layered, and beautifully concentrated feel on the palate. Coming all from the black schist soils around the village of Maury, it pretty much maxes out the QPR scale and is a complete, balanced Roussillon to drink over the coming 7-8 years.

Wine SpectatorA fresh, savory undertone marks the red berry, dried herb and grilled plum flavors in this fleshy, full-bodied red. Crisp acidity drives the finish of green olive, spice and hot stone. Drink now through 2017. 1,060 cases made.
