Quintessa is owned by the quality-driven, Chilean wine producer Agustin Huneeus who founded Quintessa in 1989, after decades in the wine industry both in California and in South America. Quintessa has received many accolades for their balanced, concentrated, terroir-driven Cabernet blends made in Rutherford. The great wines of the world consistently express the distinct qualities of the estates from which they come. In Napa, Quintessa is such a wine. To preserve the natural mosaic of the vineyard, each small plot is farmed, harvested and vinified individually so that the nuances of the land shine through. Afterward, the best components are brought together to create a wine of elegance and harmony.
Depending on the vintage, Quintessa may include some or all of the five varietals grown on the property: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carménère. The fruit is harvested early in the morning, then sorted and gravity-fed into oak, stainless steel or concrete tanks and vinified. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, the wine from each plot is aged separately for up to two years in French oak. After the final Quintessa blend is created, the wine is bottled and laid down for yet another year before release.
Since its founding, every thought and action has put the land first — starting with planting small vineyard blocks in sync with the undulating landscape, while preserving 100 acres of natural woodland. Organic farming practices are used to promote a balanced ecosystem full of life on the estate. The winery, too, is designed to fit into the contours of the hillside, using gravity to gently bring grapes into the cellar.
The 2014 Quintessa is a beautiful wine, offering both for early enjoyment and for cellaring. Dense and dark in color, with inviting aromas of fresh cherry and blackberry layered with notes of violets, graphite, and hints of cedar spice, this wine exudes warmth. Dancing on the tongue with flavors of dark berries, dark chocolate, and savory herbs, the smooth and supple tannin expresses all the hallmarks of an exceptional Quintessa vintage.

Aromas of blue fruits, blackberries, tile and lead pencil. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh, bright finish. Layered and intense with white-pepper and salt undertones. Love the finish to this racy young wine. Beautiful blue fruits! Drink in 2020 and onwards. From biodynamic grapes.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Proprietary Red Wine has a very deep purple color and notes of crushed rocks, dusty earth and iron ore over blackcurrants and black cherries, plus hints of tapenade, bay leaves, underbrush and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bursting with densely packed, youthful black fruits, framed by finely grained tannins and refreshing acidity, finishing long and mineral laced. This was tasted as a barrel sample.

An elegant, graceful style that shows depth, richness, polish and finesse, centered on a core of plum and dark berry flavors, with loamy earth, cedar and licorice notes, firming nicely on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère. Best from 2019 through 2029. 9,000 cases made.
