When we attended Vin Italy in 2012, one of our absolute favorite estates to taste and discover was Paolo Conterno. The family members we met were proud of never having used a single barrique (small barrel) at the winery. This is quite an impressive feat, since the majority of their neighbors have either tried, then abandoned the method and gone back to traditional large barrel aging, or they have switched to barrique, giving a more modern style of Barolo wines. The Conterno clan is steadfastly part of the traditional way of thinking and producing wine. They are known for owning spectacular sites in Barolo and expressing these sites' terroir's in their wines. Here we have their wine from the outstanding cru named Ginestra. We tasted this 2013 with Giorgio Conterno here stateside. The Ginestra is the crème de la crème of the Conterno estate. 30 year old vines enjoy perfect southern exposure in pockets of heavy clay. Maceration can last up to a month and the Ginestra ages 42 months in 35 HL French oak casks. If you drink Ginestra in its youth, decant at least one hour before serving.

The 2013 Barolo Ginestra shows grace and purity, with significant power at the back that is partially fueled by the wine's well-integrated alcohol (recorded at 15%). The wine's texture is compact, and the flavor knitting is tight and carefully detailed. These qualities bode very well for the future evolution of this vintage that will undoubtedly soften and flesh out with more time in the bottle."

Aromas of dried flowers, berries and sandalwood follow through to a full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Better in 2019 but delicious already.

Black cherry, mocha, plum, licorice and smoke make a strong opening statement in the 2013 Barolo Ginestra. Bold and explosive in the glass, the 2013 offers plenty of depth and power but is also marked by oak, and starting to show signs of faint oxidation. It will drink well for at least a handful of years, but does not look like a long term keeper. - Antonio Galloni
