Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best bottles of Cabernet in the shop for $20-25. It is rich, balanced, pure and complex, made from extremely low yields of under 3 tons per acre, by the team at Montes, led by winemaker Aurelio Montes. 50% of the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak, and the final blend is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from the Marchigue and Apalta estates. The wine is now being made with Dry Farming, meaning that irrigation is not used, only natural rain water in the vineyards. This has given this Cab exceedingly more concention, texture and complexity. We love it --- look for black fruits, currants, licorice, mocha and stony flavors that are in balance with fine vanillan oak. The perfect steak wine or to serve with Latin-inspired dishes.

Montes Alpha, the pioneer wine that showed the way to all other Chilean premium wines. It remains #1 in the Chilean premium wine niche, having proven early on the credibility of Montes winery as a world-class premium wine producer. All the Alpha wines have received 'Top Scoring' and 'Best Value' from the influential Wine Spectator magazine: quite an achievement for Chilean wines at this price level.

Wine EnthusiastSmoky, rubbery aromas of berry fruits and black currant lead to a fleshy, grabby, pulpy palate. Herbal berry and saucy plum flavors finish with herbal notes. Overall, this is plump, dark and honest for Chilean Cabernet, especially in a difficult year like 2016.

Wine SpectatorFresh minerality is backed by crisp acidity in this firm red. Dried cherry and currant flavors linger on the finish, with some herbal notes. Drink now through 2021. 120,000 cases made, 5,000 cases imported.
