Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best bottles of Cabernet in the shop for $20-25. It is rich, balanced, pure and complex, made from extremely low yields of under 3 tons per acre, by the team at Montes, led by winemaker Aurelio Montes. 50% of the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak, and the final blend is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from the Marchigue and Apalta estates. The wine is now being made with Dry Farming, meaning that irrigation is not used, only natural rain water in the vineyards. This has given this Cab exceedingly more concention, texture and complexity. We love it --- look for black fruits, currants, licorice, mocha and stony flavors that are in balance with fine vanillan oak. The perfect steak wine or to serve with Latin-inspired dishes.
Wine AdvocateThe 2014 Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon showed harmonious and with some restrain, quite classical and with varietal characteristics. The palate is consistent, medium-bodied with noticeable tannins, in need of food. 600,000 bottles produced.
Wine SpectatorThe flavors of red currant and dried cherry stretch out nicely, with notes of sage and cream. Dried savory accents linger on the finish, with white pepper hints. Drink now through 2019. 60,000 cases made.
