Paul Jaboulet Aîné has been a grower and shipper in the Rhône Valley since 1834. The Jaboulet company was founded by Antoine Jaboulet (1807-1864), and his twin sons, Paul and Henri (1846-1892) continued to expand the family business. The elder son ("aîné" in French), Paul, established the company in its present form and gave it his own name. Since then, the company had been run by successive generations of sons from that side of the Jaboulet family, until 2006, when the Frey family bought Jaboulet and its well-situated vineyards. Jaboulet wines symbolize robustness and elegance, essential qualities of great wines. The crown jewel is Hermitage 'La Chapelle,' which Clive Coates asserts 'is one of the great red wines of the world.' Made of 100% Syrah, 'La Chapelle' is made from various top sites in Hermitage in the Northern Rhône, and is ideal to serve with venison, roasts, red meats, and/or flavorful cheeses.

Wine Advocate reports: 'Since 2006, owner Caroline Frey has been steadily pushing for increased quality at this historic estate. Moving all of the vineyards to sustainable farming (which takes years to see benefits), both the vineyard and cellar staff have been doubled. In addition, a new gravity operated cellar was set up in 2010. All of this shows, and across the board, the wines have impeccably made, clean and pure profiles.'

Wine AdvocateThe grand vin is the 2012 Hermitage la Chapelle, and it lives up to the billing in 2012. Coming mostly from the Meal and aged in just 20% new French oak, it's a blockbuster that exhibits thrilling, mineral-drenched notes of spiced dark fruits, beef blood, black olive and toast. Full-bodied, deep, layered and incredibly concentrated, it has a stacked mid-palate and enough tannin to warrant another 4-5 years of bottle age. It will have 2-3 decades of overall prime drinking, and certainly evolve for longer.

International Wine CellarA heady, expansive bouquet evokes candied black and blue fruits, incense, violet and smoky minerals. Lush, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors show excellent clarity and vivacity for their power thanks to juicy acidity and a touch of peppery spices. Closes sweet, sappy, broad and extremely long, with smooth tannins coming on late. 94-96

Wine SpectatorVery solid, with a loamy frame around a core of fleshy plum, fig and blackberry flavors. A backdrop of licorice root and roasted espresso shows on the finish. A little shy on energy, this exhibits a hefty dose of toast, ample depth of fruit and a good tug of terroir. Best from 2017 through 2024. 200 cases imported.
