The Stagecoach Vineyard is one of the most sought after sources for Cabernet Sauvignon in the Napa Valley. This example is made by Aaron Pott, a winemaker with 20+ years experience in Napa Valley at wineries such as Newton, as well as in Bordeaux at Troplong Mondot and La Tour Figeac. The Stagecoach block he used was farmed by the talented viticulturalist Amy Wornock with vineyard consultant Bob Gallagher. There are two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon Weimer rumored to be a "Samsonite" clone from Chateau Latour (a story collaborated by Jean-Louis Mandrau, Pott's mentor and ex-director of Latour) and the See clone that made the great wines from Nathan Fay's vineyard in Stag's Leap. 'This is an exciting set of wines from Aaron Pott, who also makes wines for a small number of clients in his consulting practice. These wines are all 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.' Wine Advocate

When we met Aaron Pott, his first question to us was 'What do you know about Aaron Pott?" After graduating from UC Davis and the Universite de Bourgogne in Dijon, he worked at Robert Mondavi part-time before taking the position of assistant winemaker at Newton Vineyard, under Winemaker John Kongsgaard. It was at Newton—under the wing of his first great mentor—that Pott would be introduced to Michel Rolland. At many tastings with Kongsgaard and Rolland (set up by legendary wine collector Dade Thieriot), Pott tried to convince Rolland to find him a job in France—pulling hoses around a dark cellar and working on his language skills. Rolland soon sent word that he had found the ideal position—winemaker at Château Troplong Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé St. Emilion. Pott would thereafter become winemaker and general manager of Château La Tour Figeac Grand Cru Classé St. Emilion.

Wine AdvocateThe 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Her Majesty's Secret Service is another offering from Dr. Krupp's Stagecoach Vineyard. It exhibits chocolaty, cedary, fruitcake notes, not the density and power of Pott's other Cabernet Sauvignons, but good spice box and unsmoked cigar tobacco characteristics. Medium to full-bodied and slightly tannic, it is a beautiful wine that I may have underrated. Drink now-2027.
