The Cerretta was first produced by Elio Altare in 2005. Located in Serralunga, the vineyard plays host to some of Barlo's greatest names, including Giacomo Conterno. Just 500 cases are made each year. Altare's vines enjoy southern exposure and are grown mostly in clay. Yields average about 5 tons per hectare. Maceration is relatively short at 4 to 5 days, but rotary fermenters bring depth and structure. The Cerretta is aged for two years in French barriques.

Winemaker Elio Altare has been a leader in the revolution of cellar and vineyard techniques in the Barolo zone; among his many now-commonplace innovations were the use of rotary fermenters, a short maceration period, and the use of smallbarriques for aging. The resulting wines, from Dolcetto to Barbera to Barolo, are often considered to be the ultimate expressions of the soft, fragrant and lush qualities characteristic of the commune of La Morra, and today Altare is mentor to many of the younger generation of La Morra barolisti including Mauro Veglio, Mauro Molino, and the Revello brothers. Elio owns 5 hectares and rents four more, planted in Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. He prunes his vines very severely, wanting no more than 1.5 kilos of grapes per vine. This is the real key, Altare maintains, plus an organic approach to viticulture. "You can't make great wine without concentrated fruit."

Wine SpectatorFresh and aromatic, this red is packed with sweet cherry, leather, clove and iron flavors. Fused to a bed of stiff, mouthcoating tannins, with a long aftertaste of sweet spice and mineral. Still a baby, but well-balanced and beginning to develop. Best from 2015 through 2035. 500 cases made.
