The winery and vineyards of Markham Vineyards date back to 1874, making it one of Napa Valley's pioneer sites. Bordeaux immigrant Jean Laurent built the stone cellar which is still at the heart of the winery, and Bruce Markham purchased the old Laurent winery in 1978. Focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the winery's rich Bordeaux heritage thrives. Today Markham has 350 acres of vineyards from a full range of microclimates. This Merlot has aromas of violets, blackberries and Tahitian vanilla leading to a fleshy, round, juicy palate. Pair with grilled lamb burgers and portabella mushrooms or with rib eye steaks.

The 2021 Merlot is the Markham wine consumers are likeliest to encounter, with more than 25,000 cases bottled. It's pretty straightforward but well-made stuff, with scents of black cherries and mint, plus hints of vanilla and cedar. It's medium to full-bodied, plump and easy to drink, but it just lacks that extra bit of concentration and structure to bring it to the next level. On the other hand, it's fairly priced for what it is and where it's from.
