Nicoló Incisa della Rocchetta, the producer of Sassicaia, created a new wine for the estate in the 2000 vintage, named Guidalberto. He planted new vineyards dedicated exclusively to the production of this wine, named after Guidalberto della Gherardesca, a maternal ancestor of Incisa who cultivated vines in Bolgheri in the 19th century. The wine is conceived differently from Sassicaia but shaped by the same soil and climate. Made of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this rich, focused wine has ripe, concentrated berries, spice, vanilla and cedar in the nose leading to more of the same in the mouth. The palate is elegant with a supple texture and silky tannins on the long finish. Oak aging of this wine takes place over 12 months in 225 liter French and American oak barrels, 30% of which are new and 70% of which are from prior vintages' used for Sassicaia. The wine is released two years after the harvest and is 'made to drink while you wait for your Sassicaia'.

Wine AdvocateThis wine is showing exceptionally well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Guidalberto (Cabernet Sauvignon and a smaller percentage of Merlot) opens to a full and generous bouquet and a beautifully rich and velvety appearance. This edition of Tenuta San Guido's mid-level wine offers a bigger aromatic profile, more texture and more volume as well. Dark cherry and blackberry segue to spice, tar, leather and sweet fruit at the end. The mouthfeel is elegantly shaped, silky and nuanced. This may well be the best vintage of Guidalberto I have yet to taste-and you can get this wine at a great price too.

Wine EnthusiastThis blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot opens with aromas of black currant, star anise and a whiff of incense. It's savory and elegant, doling out flavors of dried black cherry, raspberry jam, white pepper and licorice. Fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide balanced support. Enjoy through 2027.

VinousThe 2016 Guidalberto is a wine of total precision and class. Nuanced and beautifully perfumed, with a good kick of mid-palate juiciness from the Merlot, the 2016 dazzles from the very first taste. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and floral notes add complexity on the persistent, silky finish. This is very nicely done.

Wine SpectatorShy on the nose and a touch grassy, this is lean and elegant, with black cherry, black currant, earth and spice flavors. Dense tannins underscore everything, and this finishes long. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2024. 25,000 cases made.
