Launched in 1999, Eroica is a collaboration of two of the world’s great Riesling producers: one from the Old World, Dr. Loosen estate of Germany, and the other from the New World, Chateau Ste. Michelle of Washington state. Named for Beethoven’s Third Symphony, Eroica reflects not only its grape variety and Washington State location, but also its heritage: bold and forward from its Washington roots, elegant and refined from German inspiration. Ste. Michelle has championed Riesling for more than 40 years and was among the first to plant Riesling in Washington state. Ste. Michelle catapulted into the national spotlight when their 1972 Johannisberg Riesling won the now-famous Riesling blind tasting sponsored by the Los Angeles Times in 1974. Dr. Loosen in the Mosel Valley of Germany has produced fine Riesling for over two centuries. In 1999, Ernst Loosen approached Chateau Ste Michelle with the idea of joining forces after discovering the winery’s Cold Creek Riesling and Eroica was born.

Eroica is an off-dry Washington Riesling that delivers a unique combination of mandarin orange aromas characteristic of Washington state Rieslings, melded with the mineral, spiced apple and slate notes with lively, crisp acidity associated with German Riesling. The wine’s zesty acidity, combined with a touch of sweetness, makes it a tremendously versatile and food friendly wine. Try Eroica with Asian cuisine, Indian curries, crab, scallops and sushi or a fresh salad. And...the first five Eroica vintages were on the Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of the Year list!

Wine AdvocateLess sweet than the Eroica Gold Riesling, the 2014 Eroica Riesling is a classic beauty that offers lots of citrus rind, lychee, sugared lime and even a tiny hint of petrol in its medium-bodied, juicy, vibrant and thirst-quenching style. Count me a fan and it too will be incredibly versatile on the dinner table and drink well for upwards of a decade.
