Made by Beaujolais native Stéphane Aviron, this tasty organic red is made from 50+ year old vines which give extraordinary concentration of fruit and a true essence of the terroir of the region. The wine shows itself to be full of complexity and charm at the same time, and is suitable in any and all settings where you would normally serve a fine Pinot Noir, although it is made of 100% Gamay.
Winemaker/owner Stéphane Aviron produces traditional, terroir-driven, distinctive wines from all of the important cru's. His family has hailed from the Beaujolais region for many generations, and winegrowing is clearly in his blood. We have enjoyed this wine many times at home, with friends and family. Never overpowering, beautifully aromatic, and perfectly polished, it is a Bottle Shop favorite and 2021 is a spectacular vintage.
Stéphane Aviron has adopted an almost radical return to tradition in Beaujolais: organic viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. His cru Beaujolais drink like fine Burgundy. Historically considered “poor man’s Burgundy,” a modern movement toward fruity, simple, quaffing wines boosted sales but eroded the region’s traditional quality. Stéphane Aviron has reversed the trend. By focusing on the Beaujolais village crus, the best sites for unique, expressive wines, and finding old parcels of vines, Aviron creates very expressive, age-worthy wines relying on traditional and new methods, including organic and biodynamic vineyard management. All wines are labeled “Vieilles Vignes,” old vines, because the vines are at least 40 years old. Stéphane Aviron’s wines are authentic in every way.
The Stéphane Aviron Beaujolais Villages is sourced from two of the best terroirs of the appellation, both with old vines averaging at least 50 years in age. The vines in the commune of Quincié have sandy, granite soils and the commune of Lantignié has clay and limestone soils with favorable southwest exposure. Whole clusters of grapes are fermented, and then macerated for six days to extract characters of fruit and finesse. The wine is aged in cement tanks to retain the purity of the fresh fruit. The wine shows great finesse, elegance and a very “easy drinking” nature.

Stéphane aims for an elegant, silky style on this Beaujolais Villages. On the nose, there are abundant notes of cherry blossoms, wild strawberries, red roses, violets and hints of French espelette red pepper spice. The acidity has mellowed and the wine's beautiful red fruits soar on the palate along with the aforementioned notes all wrapped in smooth tannins.
