Chalk Hill Estate Red 2015
On a spring day in 1972, Chalk Hill’s founder, Fred Furth, caught his first view of a natural amphitheatre carved into the hills of eastern Sonoma while flying over the Russian River. His intuition told him the land had the potential to support a world-class vineyard. The terrain at Chalk Hill is intricate and varied. Located at the convergence of a number of naturally defined winegrowing regions, the estate features a range of microclimates, soils and exposures that require well-reasoned, site-specific farming protocols. It is this unique complexity of terroir that allows Chalk Hill to create wines that are intense, balanced and distinctive. The Estate Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Carmenere, Merlot, and Syrah, tightly wound with velvety textures. Very appealing in its youth, but this will also age beautifully for the next 10 years.

Wine AdvocateThe 2015 Estate Red is deep garnet-purple colored and delivers a good amount of oak-inspired notions to begin over a core of blackcurrant cordial, blackberry pie, preserved plums and chocolate box with hints of vanilla pod and cigar box. Big, concentrated and full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with black fruit preserves, framed by ripe, firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a woody note. Forget it for 5-6 years and drink it over the next 20. 5,240 cases produced.
