Monteverro Toscana 2013
Monteverro lies at the foot of the small medieval town of Capalbio on the southern edge of Tuscany in Maremma, a region well-known for its originality and tradition. The vineyard estate is situated in close proximity to the coast and is characterized by its slopes on stony, red clay soil. But it is also the people who make Monteverro so unique. The pure pleasure of wine commits the team to uncompromising manual work and selection in the vineyards, and through precision and innovative technology in the cellar, ultimately helping every vine variety, every location and every vintage to achieve their optimum expression.
This is the flagship wine of the estate. Thinking of it as Premier Grand Cru of Maremma, this is made from the classic Bordeaux grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot and yet with the unmistakable character of the Tuscan coast. An ambitious wine in every respect - the grapes are exclusively from prime locations which flow gently to the Tyrrhenian sea, the wine is aged for about 24 months in barriques from the best coopers (70-80 % new wood) and then for two years in the bottle. This gives it an unparalleled strength and complexity, sophisticated coolness and elegance. Its impressive diversity of bouquets ranging from berries and spicy notes leads to richness and sultry flavors in the mouth.

James SucklingThis is a Bordeaux blend that competes with the best of Tuscany such as Sassiciaia and Ornellaia. It's so structured and refined with beautiful length and sophistication. Full body and gorgeous tension. Fantastic aromas and flavors of currants, plums and tile. Hints of hazelnuts and lavender. Linear and polished on the finish. A wine that delivers so much now but will be even better in four to five years. Best ever from here. From organically grown grapes.
Jeb DunnuckThe flagship is the 2013 Toscana, made up of 40% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot. With its sensational bouquet of crème de cassis, spring flowers, wet stone-like minerality, and graphite, this seriously good wine has more than a passing resemblance to a top vintage from Cheval Blanc! Medium to full-bodied, incredibly elegant, concentrated, and with fabulous purity of fruit, it has everything in the right places, is perfectly balanced, and again, with great, great elegance and purity. It’s a “Wow” wine from this vintage that can be drunk today or cellared for 15+ years. Bravo!
Wine AdvocateA beautiful wine, the 2013 Monteverro sports a thickly extracted and slightly retro style that recalls the heyday of the super Tuscans. It offers a subtle twist of nostalgia, but it does so with a confident personality. Dark fruit, spice, tobacco and cured leather come together as a united front. The blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The mouthfeel delivers ample power and textural richness.
