Located at the heart of Stags Leap District, the original Stags' Leap Winery has continued a proud winemaking heritage in the prestigious appellation that bears the winery name for over 100 years. Founded by Horace Chase and his wife Minnie Mizner Chase in 1893, Minnie was the daughter of a prominent San Franciscan who was a U.S. Senator and Ambassador to Central America.

The property was named "Stags' Leap" after an old Indian legend that, one version says, told of a stag leaping across crags of the palisades (bordering the east side of the estate) to escape hunters.

The entire estate is comprised of 240 acres but the winery has a 90-acre vineyard divided into 23 separate blocks based upon soil types and exposure to the sun. Within individual blocks, each varietal is matched to the certain rootstocks and trellising systems. The primary varietals are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Syrah. Small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Grenache and Syrah are planted throughout the property to add depth and complexity to the final bottlings.

Wine AdvocateThe 40th anniversary cuvée 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon S.L.V. is a real beauty without a hard edge to be found. It has a velvety texture, beautiful blueberry, black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, a judicious touch of oak, sweet, creamy full-bodied opulence, stunning purity, and represents a prodigious effort to celebrate 40 years.
