La Carrière is the steepest, rockiest vineyard on the Peter Michael Knights Valley estate. Situated between 1,200 and 1,700 feet above sea level on steep mountain slopes, some exceeding forty percent in grade, the vineyard has ideal southern and southeastern exposures. Shallow rocky soils provide excellent drainage, low fertility and the lowest average yields on the estate. Typically La Carrière offers the cleanest, most citrus like fruit profile of any of the Peter Michael Chardonnays coupled with vivid 'liquid minerality' that speaks of sea salt and stones. The name La Carrière translates to 'the Quarry'.

Wine AdvocateThe 2014 Chardonnay La Carrière displays ripe, honeyed tangerine and nectarine notes, some wet pebbles and crisp acids. As Nicholas Morlet says, this wine is the Puligny-Montrachet of the portfolio. It is easily going to age nicely for at least a decade. 91-96 There's nothing that this winery does that is not admirable. Consider that they work with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, they produce world-class wines from all of these varietals, and they do it from Knight's Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Of course, they have had some fabulous winemakers pass through, including the likes of Helen Turley and Mark Aubert, Luc Morlet and now his brother, Nicolas Morlet. Nevertheless, much of the credit has to go to Sir Peter Michael, the owner, who gives these people carte blanche, and expects their very best.
