The California appellation known as Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County has a long, interesting history of grape growing, which has come full circle in the last few years. In the 1790's, Spanish missionaries thought the soils and climate of the Santa Lucia Highlands would be ideal for growing wine grapes so they planted grapevines there. Yet two hundred years later, instead of vineyards, there were cattle, sheep and horses grazing the hills and acting as the primary industry of the area. In the late 1970's, Nicky and Gaby Hahn saw the potential to re-establish grape growing in the SLH. They purchased hundreds of acres of land (at a fraction of the cost they would now) and in 1980, the Hahns released their first wine from SLH. Eight years later, Nicky led the charge to establish SLH as an American Viticultural Area, a dream he saw realized in 1991. Today, Hahn Family Wines, is run by Nicky and Gaby’s son Philip, and the estate is comprised of 650 acres of sustainably farmed estate vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands.
Santa Lucia Highlands has become well-known for producing excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The estate-bottled Hahn SLH Pinot Noir is one of the best buys from here on the market. Aged in French oak barrels for 11 months, this opens with alluring aromas of black cherry and dark currant. What follows are intense black fruit flavors balanced by ripe red plums and a hint of allspice. A slight acidity beautifully highlights the supple tannins and persistent finish. Serve with grilled chicken, lamb, salmon or cheeses.

From its fragrant wild strawberries bathed in tilled soil to aromas of spiced oak, the aromatics alone are inspirational. Brambly cranberry is juicy to the core. This Pinot has an innate freshness revved by high-toned acidity. It finishes with the romance of rose petals and Italian herbs.

“Brilliant scarlet. Aromas of fresh dark berries, pungent flowers, cola and a hint of allspice on the perfumed nose. Juicy and expansive in the mouth, offering concentrated bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors braced by a core of zesty acidity. Picks up licorice and savory herb notes with air and finishes long and smooth, with discreet tannins sneaking in late.”

Fresh carnation and raspberry are spiced up with peppercorns, smashed asphalt and turned earth on the complex nose of this bottling. The palate is quite cohesive in flavors of roasted cherry and ripe strawberry, with fennel pollen, crushed slate and baking spice adding depth.
