During our last trip to Napa, we visited Frank Family Vineyards, which is located within the historic Larkmead property. The winery was originally founded by Rich Frank with his friend and business partner, Koerner Rombauer of Rombauer fame. Today, owners Rich and Leslie Frank share a passion for wine and travel, producing high quality, world-class wines with winemaker, Todd Graff. Todd's resume includes stints at Joseph Phelps, Stag's Leap and Schramsberg, as well as in Saint-Emilion, Germany and Australia. He has been at Frank family since 2003, and helps to manage over 200 acres of prime estate vineyards in Napa, including in Rutherford, Carneros and the Capell Valley. The combo of low yielding hillside vines and complex, unique soils give Frank Family Cabs incredible richness, velvety tannins and true Napa character. If you plan on heading out to Napa, a visit to Frank Family is a bucolic experience--- giant 100 year old elm trees frame the view of the vineyards, gentle breezes blow, all while you taste wine in the California is a true pleasure!

The Frank Family winery was first constructed in 1884, part of the Larkmead winery. The beautiful stone building was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby hills in 1906 and today, is on the National Register of Historical Places and listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California. Frank Family produces distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Petite Syrah. Aged 20 months in 50% new French oak, the 2013 Rutherford Reserve is made of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Connoisseurs' Guide to California WineConcentrated, refined and mannerly, this bottling makes good use of its currant and dried black cherry fruit and hints of crème brûlée to repeat its high standing with us. It is supple, rich and a tad rounded, but never soft, on the palate with supportive acid giving it both energy and length. Its late-arriving tannins provide the grip to stand up to savory meats today and also help assure a long and happy voyage in the cellar. For our part, it deserves to rest five years or more.

Wine AdvocateContaining a 2% splash of Petit Verdot, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford is very deep garnet-purple colored and opens with tar, black soil and truffles notes with a core of crème de cassis, stewed plums and baked cherries plus wafts of smoked meats and sautéed herbs. The palate is medium to full-bodied with good intensity and depth in the mouth, featuring very fine-grained tannins and a lively finish.

Wine SpectatorThe dark currant and steeped plum fruit is framed by singed alder, dark tobacco and sassafras notes, with a hint of licorice root. Grippy through the finish, offering a tarry edge. A touch brawny overall, but showing good energy. Give this a little time. Best from 2021 through 2032.
