During our last trip to Napa, we visited Frank Family Vineyards, which is located within the historic Larkmead property. The winery was originally founded by Rich Frank with his friend and business partner, Koerner Rombauer of Rombauer fame. Today, owners Rich and Leslie Frank share a passion for wine and travel, producing high quality, world-class wines with winemaker, Todd Graff. Todd's resume includes stints at Joseph Phelps, Stag's Leap and Schramsberg, as well as in Saint-Emilion, Germany and Australia. He has been at Frank family since 2003, and helps to manage over 200 acres of prime estate vineyards in Napa, including in Rutherford, Carneros and the Capell Valley. The combo of low yielding hillside vines and complex, unique soils give Frank Family Cabs incredible richness, velvety tannins and true Napa character. If you plan on heading out to Napa, a visit to Frank Family is a bucolic experience--- giant 100 year old elm trees frame the view of the vineyards, gentle breezes blow, all while you taste wine in the California sun...it is a true pleasure!

The Frank Family winery was first constructed in 1884, part of the Larkmead winery. The beautiful stone building was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby hills in 1906 and today, is on the National Register of Historical Places and listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California. Frank Family produces distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Petite Syrah. Aged 20 months in 50% new French oak, the 2013 Rutherford Reserve is made of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Wine AdvocateThe 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Reserve is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged 20 months in 50% new French oak. This has a more saturated purple color, a glorious extract and richness, built with a solid inner core of essence that is pure, dark and impressive. Some dusty/loamy undertones are present, but the dark blackberry and cassis fruit dominate this full-bodied beauty. It still has tannins to shed, but this wine should hit its peak in another 5-7 years and last a quarter-century or more.

Wine SpectatorA rugged style, with dense earth, gravel, graphite, berry and cedar flavors that give this a distinctive presence. The tannins are dense and extracted, but the slow-emerging dark berry fruit is captivating. Drink now through 2028. 1,000 cases made.
