Brand Craggy Range
Origin New Zealand

Founded in 1988, Craggy Range is the embodiment of a dream, a commitment and a legacy, which is safeguarded by a 1,000 year family trust. In 1993, Terry and Mary Peabody set out to create a lasting legacy. A wine estate that could be passed down through generations. Their vision was bold: to begin with untouched land and build something truly exceptional, with quality as the cornerstone from the very first vine.

Their search took them across France, America, and Australia before they arrived in New Zealand - a remote and dramatic landscape. Here, Terry discovered what he hadn't found elsewhere: an exceptional cool climate region, an emerging wine industry with a deep-rooted farming tradition, and an enduring pioneering spirit. New Zealand's temperate maritime climate and youthful soils offered the perfect conditions to produce benchmark wines of remarkable freshness, purity, and elegance. They sought out the most distinctive parcels of land - terroirs capable of producing wines that truly reflect their place. This led them to the raw, gravelly soils of Gimblett Gravels, Hawke's Bay and the layered terraces of Te Muna, Martinborough.

Today, with three generations of family working together in the business, the Peabody family's founding vision continues as it was the day they first broke ground.

Handpicked from the higher terrace of Craggy Range's Te Muna Road Vineyard, this Pinot Noir reveals a silky, layered texture with remarkable complexity. Over ten carefully selected clones from diverse blocks are harvested and vinified separately, then artfully blended to capture purity, depth, and a true sense of place in this New Zealand Pinot Noir.

Of the six Pinot Noirs from New Zealand to feature in our Top 50 selections since 2018, this is the third to come from Wairarapa’s Martinborough (the other three, unsurprisingly, have been Central Otago wines). This is an uncompromisingly dark wine that plays to New Zealand’s strengths in terms of purity and vivacity of fruit: raspberry, cherry and plum come streaming from the glass, and the fine meshing of fruit and oak in this wine adds to its lustre and appeal. In the mouth, the wine is both long and broad but not in any way clumsy, and the fruit flavours (raspberry to the fore again) are hypnotic. Svelte tannins are barely palpable, so there’s no textural barrier to entry. *2025 Decanter World Wine Awards - Best in Show*
