Piaggia Pietranera Toscana 2023
Piaggia is located in the heart of the Carmignano region of Tuscany. The total vineyard extension is approximately 15 hectares, divided between the area of S. Cristina a Mezzana and the municipality of Poggio a Caiano, both areas with a great potential for top quality wines. Mauro Vannucci started this activity in 1990 because of his great passion for great red wines, with the aim to produce wines up to the standard of Carmignano appellation. In its 30 years of existence, Piaggia has managed to solidly establish its place among the great wineries of the classic Tuscan DOC of Carmignano, being called by Gambero Rosso “one of the best wineries in Tuscany."
Vineyard Management: Piaggia is a practicing organic winery. Integrated insect and disease control is followed. Organic fertilizers, copper and sulphur-based products are mainly used, but the vineyards see no insecticides or herbicides. The soil between the rows of vines is tilled. Low doses of SO2 in the wines for preservation.
- 80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Franc

- 1700 cases produced annually
Intense and thick ruby red color. Complex on the nose, reminiscent of fruits of the forest jam, sweet spices, thyme and cocoa. Full-bodied. Excellent balance between alcohols and polyalcohols, acids and tannins, with a persistent finish and a pleasant sweet, fresh and fruity follow-through. It goes well with mature cheeses, red meat and game.

The 2023 Pietranera pulls the taster down to earth with a classic blend of flowery underbrush and worn leather giving way to peppery florals, raspberries and hints of spice. This is energetic and racy in style, with crisp red and blue fruits cascading across a core of brisk acidity as a twist of sour citrus adds lovely contrast. Gently tannic yet mouthwatering, the 2023 tapers off with a pleasantly bitter tinge of blackberry that fades slowly. This has a savory mineral character that I quite enjoy. It's a sultry rendition of Pietranera.

Graphite, sage and cherry aromas segue to juicy cherry, raspberry, plum and eucalyptus flavors. This red firms up on the finish, where the savory notes are wrapped in a solid grip of tannins. Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2028. 1,700 cases made, 400 cases imported.
